it's been a while, so theories change relative to the closeness to the subject. Today it struck me, it's a lot like Covers, bands playing other bands' songs. for the most part it's dingy pub band covers of standards, the same track listing every week (down the Miami end of CCLC). It doesn't sound that great and after the novelty of the first time wears off, it gets pretty bloody boring, and you just hope to god that this time they'll do something original, but they never do.
Then you have punk covers, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes being the best at this, who remake work to the point where it's fun everytime, you always want to get into it and sing along, because you get so much simple pleasure out of it.
at the top of the line, Sarah Blasko covers Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House, and you just hope that once in your life you can make such beautiful music, and share it with someone special.
but this could be applied to regular music, so why Covers? because it's already been done before. someone, somewhere has sung the same song you sing out. how good your cover of the original sin is entirely up to you.
